NaNoWriMo: Your Turn!

We have a complete week before the AMAZING NaNoWriMo (in other words, National Novel Writing Month). This is where I’m attempting to write 50,000 words–that’s 1,667 words per day, or about three and a half pages each day–all in 30 days!

For newbies, or those who are interested in joining us, check out this awesome blog from Did I mention that this is FREE? There are opportunities to donate to support other writers or to buy NaNo merch, but there is no monthly fee to participate. We just need your brain (muhahaha!). Think writing 50,000 words in a single month is absolute madness? Hundreds of thousands of writers are doing it every November and now you can, too! Not sure why writing that much would even be worth it? Check out my top 10 reasons for participating in National Novel Writing Month, and come join the fun!

I personally am eager to try this out, even with some changes going on in my life. Though in this blog she gives 10 reasons, I’d like to state some of the reasons that mean the most to me.

  1. I am challenging myself to get out of “how I’ve always done it.” This is an opportunity for me to write simply for the love of writing, even if it’s not 100% perfect. I will forgo editing for a month and just write what I’d like to see included in the story. Only after the month of November will I go back to fix my story.
  2. I would like to see another published book emerge. I am an author because I like sharing my heart. That’s what this is. Even though it might take a while for this book to see the light of day, the hard part will be out of the way, and then I can focus on what would make it better, relateable and interesting.
  3. I am sooooo excited about it! As I’ve spent the last several weeks developing some sort of outline (if you’re a pantser, and decide to join the day before, you won’t even need this!). As the characters emerge and their personalities take on a life of their own, I am so eager to see what develops from my original ideas as I start to put this story on paper!

If you’ve had a story that keeps rolling around in your head, I encourage you to try this! It is a fantastic, community-supported way to begin writing, and you don’t even need to feel obliged to share it! If you would like to join me, check out the blog I mentioned. Also, once you’ve signed up, add me as your writing buddy! Look under the search bar. My username is HMDillard.

See you soon!
